A NEWENT nursery and garden centre is set to expand as business is booming.

Roses Country Fayre, on Ledbury Road, has submitted a planning application for extensions to the existing shop and the addition of new car parking facilities.

Barbara Rose, who runs the business with her husband Chris, said: "We are hoping to expand our shop and have more horticultural products to generally improve and increase our sales."

The firm grows its own plants and for the past two years has supplied the hanging baskets for the Ledbury in Bloom effort, which this year picked up several awards in the national competition.

Mrs Rose said the success had helped boost sales.

"Things are going well and generally, garden centres are doing well," she said.

Newent Town Council considered the application at a meeting on Monday night (December 8) and offered no objections.

The plan now goes to the Forest of Dean District Council, where planners will consider it and a decision taken in weeks to come.

If the application is successful, the work should get under way in the early spring.
