THE people of Newent marked the start of the festive season proper with the turning on of the new Christmas lights.
Newent resident and guest of honour Megan Brindley, aged eight, turned on the lights on Friday in front of a large crowd.
Megan suffers from Klippel Trenaunay Syndrome and has a birthmark over 50 per cent of her body. She has received successful laser surgery treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital, which will receive the collection money donated on the night.
Megan arrived at the Market House, accompanied by Father Christmas, in a cart drawn by a shire horse. The cart was part of the Lamp Light Parade, which also included the town crier, St Mary's Children's Choir and the Air Cadets.
Festive cheer was provided by music from 2UP and a snow machine that pumped fake snow out of the Market House.
Other attractions included Santa's Grotto, hot food and roasted chestnuts on sale, fairground rides and stalls and a number of shops that stayed open late.
A children's fancy dress competition was won by Aaron George, Daniel George and Jamie Parker, who all dressed as Peter Pan.
The shop window display competition was won by Chillout Zone.
Newent mayor Fred Passant said the turnout by members of the public was very good.
"The Chamber of Trade has done a splendid job this year," he said. "It's only the start of new lights for Newent, we are going to add to them next year. I think everybody was well pleased."
