Letters and articles in the Hereford Times, show clearly the exasperation felt by business owners, lorry drivers, car drivers and a vast majority of local people, concerning the lack of planning for a bypass, and a Rotherwas Relief road project.

Present gridlock situations have caused many to question why the issue is unresolved, when it has been talked about for more than 20 years.

An RAC Foundation report (a respected body with expertise in traffic problems) identified sites that urgently needed improvements to promote the strategic road network.

Only vital road projects are included, and the chief executive in his foreword said: "To keep to a reasonable and manageable programme, the list is confined to those the Foundation believes are crucial to effective operation of the (road) network."

Not surprisingly, the 'A49 Hereford' is listed.

Perhaps, with such backing, our politicians should get together and urge the government to support this proposal. The money can be found, according to the RAC - as motorists pay £44 billion pa fuel duty, vehicle tax and VAT, yet only £6 billion is spent on roads.

As the report predicts a 20% increase in congestion in the next six years, (and previous research has been accurate) Hereford must start to act, at long last, rather than pontificate and generally avoid the issue.
