A Leominster dealer who pushed hard drugs for five weeks to fund a £100-a-day addiction has been jailed for four years at Worcester Crown Court.

Heroin with a street value of £1,400 was seized by police who raided Andrew Powell's home in Croft Street, Leominster.

He confessed to buying the drugs in Birmingham the day before for £540, said David Iles, prosecuting. He was caught on December 12 last year.

Powell said he had started by selling five wraps of heroin a day but increased it to 20 wraps over the previous fortnight.

The father of two, an addict for six years, said he needed to pay off debts and look after his family. He had a previous conviction for supplying heroin in 1999.

He admitted supplying heroin and possession with intent to supply.

Nicolas Cartwright, defending, said 34-year-old Powell was a small-scale dealer for a short time.

Judge Andrew Geddes said although the defendant had been frank with police they were serious offences.
