Newent Community School is just one of 14 from around the UK to reach the finals of the Schools' Question Time Challenge, backed by veteran broadcaster David Dimbleby.
The school, off Watery Lane, will now get a £500 grant from BT to stage a local Question Time-style event on March 26, when a team of visiting judges will assess how well the students do.
Four schools nationally will then be chosen to produce a Question Time programme for the BBC, which will be screened this summer.
To make it through to the final 14, Newent Community School submitted a proposal for a Question Time that demonstrated interest in current affairs including student tuition fees, the war in Iraq and drug use.
