Hereford United progressed to the LDV Vans Trophy second round in dramatic style at Edgar Street last night.

With memories of last season's spot-kick shoot-out failure in the play-off semi-final against Aldershot Town, Bulls' fans were hardly at their most confident when the 120 minutes came and went without a winner being established.

And their mood was hardly enhanced when Scunthorpe goalkeeper Tom Evans dived to his right to keep out the Bulls first spot-kick from Danny Williams, usually a reliable penalty-taker.

But Hereford went on to find a goalkeeping hero of their own as Jonathan Gould dived to keep out Scunthorpe penalties from Tom Brighton and Cleveland Taylor.

With Mark Robinson, Tom Smith and Simon Travis all succeeding with their kicks, it just left Danny Carey-Bertram to finish things off.

The young striker, with just 37 minutes of first-team action behind him this season, showed no nerves as he stepped up to blast the ball home and send fans and players wild with delight.

Hereford survived an opening onslaught from the visitors who threatened to race away with the game in the opening 25 minutes.

The Bulls hardly had an attack as Gould made good saves from Taylor and Michael Rankine.

Hereford, however, gradually found their feet and took the lead with a goal of exceptional quality on 35 minutes.

Craig Stanley picked the ball up just inside the Scunthorpe half and raced forward, brushing off a number of challenges before planting a superb 20-yarder into the corner of Evans' goal.

There will no doubt, however, be a coaching inquest into the Scunthorpe equaliser on 57 minutes.

Questions will be asked as to how Steve Torpey was able to leap unchallenged to head home a corner from inside the six-yard box.

But Hereford gained in strength as the game continued with a number of good openings missed.

Sub Lee Mills might have saved the shoot-out stress if he had hit the target with a late chance.
