Hereford United midfielder Craig Stanley has spoken of the importance of maintaining a winning mentality as bogey club Burton Albion visit Edgar Street tomorrow in the Nationwide Conference (3pm).

The feel-good factor is as strong as ever at United following five straight victories, including Tuesday night's dramatic penalty shoot-out joy over Scunthorpe United in the first round of the LDV Vans Trophy.

Former Telford United man Stanley got the sequence up and running himself after netting the late goal that clinched a 2-1 win at Gravesend and Northfleet last month.

Nigel Clough's Albion will look to upset the form book and repeat the success they enjoyed last season when they took six points off the Bulls.

The remarkable double over Graham Turner's men was achieved with a 4-0 hammering at Eton Park followed by a narrow 2-1 win at United headquarters.

Stanley was not part of the Hereford set-up then but he believes last year's defeats count for nothing as United stand a realistic chance of going top of the Conference tomorrow night if league leaders Barnet fail to claim three points against Woking.

He said: "Everything has gone well since the Gravesend result. We've played good football, won our games and picked up maximum points.

"It was important that we improved our home form and the wins against Scarborough and Aldershot were massive results for us. It's going to be tough against Burton because they are a good side but we have definitely got the players to beat them.

"We've got a very strong squad and that keeps everybody on their toes. All the players want to be part of the team because things are going well.

"The squad is good enough for us to challenge for promotion. We proved against Scunthorpe with our performance that a lot of the players are capable of playing at a higher level."

United captain Tony James is still suffering from a groin strain and Tamika Mkandawire is poised to keep his place in defence partnering Tom Smith and Andy Tretton.

Jamie Pitman is also doubtful but Rob Purdie has started training again following an ankle injury.
