Hereford United ultimately emerged with a comfortable 6-2 win from their Herefordshire Senior Cup quarter-final at Edgar Street.

But, with 15 minutes to play and the score at 3-2, West Midlands League Premier Division Wellington still harboured hopes of a surprise.

The Bulls, who had dominated the first half but scored just two goals, pulled away in the closing stages.

Hereford took the lead on 23 minutes when Adam Stansfield knocked a rebound home after Danny Williams' free-kick was parried by keeper Marcus Priday.

Then, five minutes before the break, ex-Hartlepool left-back Mark Robinson, on a month's trial, slid the ball home at the second attempt.

Wellington reduced the arrears in the second half when Keith Jones centred for sub Robbie Parsons to beat Ben Scott.

But Danny Williams put Hereford two goals to the good soon after from a free-kick following a foul on Craig Stanley.

Scott was lucky to escape a caution for bringing down Parsons on the edge of the area and Matt Williams reduced the deficit with another superb shot.

In the 78th minute, however, Hereford's superior fitness in the hot conditions finally began to show through.

Tamika Mkandawire headed home after Tom Smith's header came back off the bar.

Four minutes from the end, Williams converted a penalty after sub Sam Gwynne's ankles had been tapped by Andy Price.

After Andy Williams hit the post, Stansfield rounded things off from a Simon Travis cross late on.

Hereford: Scott, Travis, Robinson, Mkandawire, James (March 63), Smith, D Williams, Pitman (Gwynne 85), Stansfield, Stanley, Purdie (A Williams 69). Sub not used: Ding.
