GOALKEEPER Matt Baker is the latest player to join the exodus of star names from Hereford United.

But 24-year-old Baker joins Wrexham with the best wishes of manager Graham Turner who has paid tribute to his services to the club.

Baker ended weeks of speculation last night by putting pen to paper on a deal with the Coca Cola League One club where he will link up with former Kidderminster Harriers duo Dean Bennett and Danny Williams.

Turner admitted it was a good move for the keeper.

"I spoke to him last night and he expressed his appreciation for all that has been done since he's been at Hereford," said Turner.

"I can understand his desire to play in the league. It's a decent level and it's a great opportunity for him.

"To be fair to Matt he's given the club great service. We would like to have kept him but I think our supporters will appreciate what he's done and wish him well.

Baker's departure is another wrench for the Edgar Street club who have already seen last season's record-breaking outfit dismantled with the exits of key players such as Steve Guinan, Michael Rose and Ben Smith.

However, Turner is already moving to replace the England National Game XI goalkeeper.

"We've got a number of irons in the fire but we won't rush because it's an important position to fill," he said.

Baker arrived at Hereford four seasons ago from Hull City and was initially number two to Scott Cooksey.
