CARDIFF City fans want their new stadium to be named in honour of their former player John Charles, who died on Saturday aged 72.

Hundreds of Bluebirds followers have already made their feelings felt by contacting local newspapers, radio stations and websites in a bid see Charles' memory live on.

Cardiff owner Sam Hammam earlier this season said the soon-to-be-built 30,000 all-seater stadium would not be called Ninian Park and would have to have a strong reference to the city or Wales.

However, Hammam may be persuaded to appease the mood of the Cardiff fans mourning the former Hereford United player's death.

n Sunderland have issued an apology after a minority of their fans disrupted a minute's silence for John Charles at Cardiff on Saturday.
