A CRADLEY couple who saw tsunami waves devastate a Sri Lankan coastal resort have stayed behind to help disaster victims.

Richard Williams and his Sri Lankan partner Swarni Seneviratne have raised £15,000 by asking friends and relatives for donations and plan to start a relief charity on their return home.

Mr Williams described the plight of people as desperate.

With Swarni's brother Eugene, a manager for the Seylan Bank, they have already raised enough cash for two lorrry loads of goods to be delivered to Yala on New Year's Day and now want to build three houses for homeless people at Galle.

When the tsunami hit Mount Lavinia, where they were holidaying, it killed eight people on the beach. The couple managed to flee to Colombo.

Mr Williams said people in Sri Lanka were "in grief".
