RELIEF ROAD - News that the definitive route has been chosen for Talgarth's long awaited relief road has been hailed as a great New Year boost for the local community. Liberal Democrat County Councillor William Powell, who helped to argue the case for an early start date at September's public inquiry praised the Welsh Assembly Government's decision to press ahead with its preferred route. Welsh Assembly Transport Minister, Andrew Davies signalled the go-ahead for the A479 Talgarth Relief Road and Bronllys Bypass just before the Christmas break, by making the line, side roads and compulsory purchase orders necessary. Following the public inquiry in September 2004 into the draft orders, which would allow for the construction of the scheme and the compulsory purchase of the land and rights required, the inspector, Emyr Jones, recommended that the published draft orders be made, including the minor modifications presented by objectors at the inquiry. The scheme is scheduled to get underway during 2005 and is expected to last for 12 months. Copies of the inspector's report are available to view at Powys County Council's Brecon HQ, Neuadd Brycheiniog; the Co-op Stores, The Square, Talgarth; Bronylls Post Office, Anchorage Caravan Park, Bronylls and Talgarth Library, New Street, Talgarth.
