Conservationist Eddie Booth gave a talk about the Master's House to around 30 members of the Ledbury Civic Society and guests at the Burgage Hall on Friday.
Mr Booth, a partner in The Conservation Studio, travelled from Cirencester to give a slide-show about his report on the medieval building, being carried out for Herefordshire Council.
The council hopes to refurbish the Grade II* listed building, with the help of grants, and make it the new premises for the town library, one-stop shop and tourist information centre.
Civic society spokesman Roy Haworth said: "Looking at the outside, one sees the building has been constructed with different parts, built at widely differing times, centuries apart in some cases."
Mr Booth said research had even revealed where and when some of the timber had been used to build or extend the rambling medieval building.
