SWIFTS grabbed a late winner to complete a hard-fought double over Westfields and extend their lead at the top of the HFA U18 Floodlit League.

Ledbury TOWN SWIFTS 2, WESTFIELDS 1

The home side made the perfect start when midfielder Tim Rutherford spun smartly and rifled home a low shot from 12 yards in the sixth minute

Swifts keeper Adam McTear pulled off two sparkling finger-tip saves to deny Westfields an equaliser from set pieces.

Ledbury striker Dan Herbert crashed a bullet header against an upright early in the second half as Swifts stepped up a gear.

Westfields equalised with a stunning 20-yard shot in the 77th minute.

Defenders Pat Locke, Mark Wildig, Luke Taylor, Tom Locke and Matt Fortnam remained rock solid as the unbeaten home side went all out for a fifth victory in six games.

With just five minutes remaining Rutherford burst through the middle and was sent sprawling on the edge of the penalty area. The ball broke to striker Asa Smith who netted with a volley, whipped just inside the post from 15 yards.

Swifts are at home to Hay-on-Wye on Wednesday (March 16).
