LOCAL organisers for the charity Water Aid sent off cheques worth £1,113 this week to help people in India.

Run by Kevin and Ruth Walton of Colwall, the participants donate a penny for each pint of water they collect from springs around the Malvern Hills.

The money goes towards providing fresh water supplies to communities in India

Until now, money raised by the Waltons has gone towards water supplies for villages in Andra Pradesh.

But this week's donation will go towards a new project to supply safe drinking water and sanitation for three slums in Madurai, a city in Tamil Nadu.

Water Aid will provide training in hygiene and in maintaining the equipment, and 2,000 families will benefit directly.

Mr Walton said: "We are now all committed to supporting this project over the next two years."

Anyone who wants to join the scheme is welcome - just contact the Waltons on 01684 540596 or ewkwalton@onetel.org.uk.
