ACORNS HOSPICE - On Saturday, June 11, the organisers of the Almeley whist club, Alan and Sandra Payne and Anne Preece, arranged a tea party in support of the greatest afternoon tea party, to raise money for the Children's Acorns Hospice Appeal. Tea was laid out in the lovely garden to the rear of the Bells Inn. There was also a raffle and organic plants were for sale. So, it was disappointing that there was such a poor local attendance. However, those participating in this event spent an enjoyable and relaxing afternoon. The second of the whist drives organised by the Almeley Whist Club was held on The village Hall on Tuesday, June 14. Mr Rick Harris again acted as MC he thanked players for their support and presented prizes to Mrs E Horner, Mrs E Exton, Mrs D Brown, Mrs Griffiths, Mrs K Jenkins, Mrs M Goode, Mrs I Hill, Mr B Thomas and Mrs S Payne. As this was the last meeting of the present series, Mr P Mokler thanked, on behalf of the players, Mr R Harris, Mr and Mrs A Payne, Mrs A Preece, Mrs J Cadman and Mrs D Brown for all their efforts which had made the series such a success. As a result of the two whist drives and the tea party, £320 was raised for the Acorns Children's Hospice.
