YOUNGSTERS in Leominster can now have some wheely good fun thanks to the opening of a new skatepark.

A free facility for wheel sports is now up and running thanks to the efforts of youngsters and the Syndonia Recreational Appeal Fund.

The £140,000 skatepark has become reality after a process that started with a group of youngsters approaching the mayor at the time.

Bill Healey, chairman of trustees, said: “About 18 months ago, we decided instead of sitting in committees we would become more pro-active and involve the young people.

“We have a group of about 30 young people who have had training in health and safety and first aid.

“They have been involved in raising the money. Two young people, over the age of 18, also sit on the management committee.”

Mr Healey said that after a £49,500 grant came from Advantage West Midlands, other grants came on board. A total of £100,000 was raised in grants and gifts and the project was lent support by Leominster Town Council.

“In Leominster, there are a lot of free facilities for young children but there is nothing for the older children for free,” said Mr Healey.

“Over the years there has been problems with anti-social behaviour because they are going around the streets. This will provide an activity totally free.”

The facility, near the site of the old swimming pool, will not be open at night but opening hours have yet to be set.

An official opening will take place later this year.

Recent problems, including damage to a fence, have been overcome and Mr Healey hopes other youngsters will help finish the project. Half the ramps required have been fitted but work still needs to be done.
