WORRIED residents have made an eleventh hour attempt to rescue a Hereford post office earmarked for closure.

Tuesday was the final day of Herefordshire’s six-week consultation period and saw protestors march from the threatened Redhill Post Office.

The demonstration was aimed at showing Post Office bosses the effect closure would have on members of the community.

Sarah Carr, the Liberal Democrat’s parliamentary candidate for Hereford and south Herefordshire, has posted petitions from Redhill residents as well as forwarding her response to the proposed closures.

“The Redhill residents haven’t shied away from anything during this campaign,” she said.

“I have also written my response to the consultation summarising the views of thousands of people (across the county) who I have been campaigning alongside trying to save their local post office.

“I will not rest until we have fought these ill thought out proposals as hard as we possibly can. The game is most definitely not over.”

Mrs Carr was joined on the march by councillors Chris Chappell and Glenda Powell and Conservative parliamentary candidate for Hereford and south Herefordshire Jesse Norman.

Mr Norman has sent his response to Post Office bosses arguing the closures would have a negative effect on Herefordshire communities.

“This is the culmination of an 18-month campaign,” he said.

“Whatever the result, I would like to thank and pay tribute to everyone who has written in or called and emailed the campaign.

“The level of support has been absolutely fantastic.”

Meanwhile, the Post Office has thanked those who supplied feedback since the provisional hit list was released at the end of August.

“We would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to contact us or who attended meetings to comment on our proposals,” said Jaquie Stenson, spokesperson for Post Office Ltd.

“We will now take a few weeks to review all the information we have received before reaching final decisions on the future of the Post Office network in the area.”
