GRAHAM Gammage romped home with a score of 46 points in the first of the Winter Pairs' Stableford competition at Hereford Municipal.

In the competition, pairs are separated and their combined stableford scores on the day are counted in the best five of seven rounds over the winter period.

Despite the windy conditions, big hitters were the order of the day, and Kevin Childs finished second when he returned 43 points.

Both players had their handicaps cut by two shots for their efforts.

Shaun Chambers shared third place on 37 points with Graham Nielson Lyn Granger was the best lady on the day and finished a respectable ninth overall, only one shot behind her husband, Len.

Results: 1 Graham Gammage (20) 46 points, 2 Kevin Childs (18) 43, =3 Shaun Chambers (10) 37, =3 Graham Nielson (23) 37.

Derrick and Harvey Hancock took first place in the Belmont Winter League competition.

The Hancocks finished with 47 points, coming ahead of Len Andrews and Pete Edwards (44 points), and Pete James and Sean Pockett (44 points).

John Alexander won the seniors' Monthly Medal in the 0-14 handicap section.

Alexander shot an 80-10-70 to beat off the challenge of second-placed Tommy Boswell (84-13-71) and third-placed Alan May (84-12-72).

In the 15-28 section, Des Samuel clinched first place with 87-19-68, ahead of Brian Matthews (90-19-71) and Angus Maclean (91-19-72).

Former captain Neville Ovens and Derek Whatmore won a seniors' stableford competition prior to the annual general meeting of Ross-on-Wye.

Ovens and Whatmore returned a score of 39 stableford points over 16 holes, beating Stanley Karger and Graham Monnington on a countback.

Third-place went to Bob Henbest and Fred Stott with 38 points, again beating Graham Smith and Bob Cooper on a countback.

At the annual meeting, retiring seniors' captain, Terry Savage, reported on a very successful year and thanked all members who had turned out for the team.

Officers elected: Seniors' captain, Tim Rigden; Seniors' vice-captain, Andrew Mollett; Seniors' secretary, Keith Ray; treasurer, Graham Baum; Committee members: Peter Lowe, Pat Curtis and Fred Stott.

Tim Townsend won a hard-fought four-club Stableford competition at Herefordshire GC.

Townsend scored 43 points to win the 0-17 division from George Gobey (43 points) and Kevin Baylis (39 points).

Nigel Yarwood, with 38 points, was the winner in the 18-28 division, while Graham Davies was second, on 36 points, and Ken Williams, third, with 35 points.

David Knowles was the winner of Herefordshire's British Legion Cup.

Knowles took the title for having the best overall nett - 62 - and is now playing off a much reduced handicap.

Peter Hebbes, with 75-12-63, won the 0-14 handicap section in the Monthly Medal.

John Walters (75-8-67) took second place on a countback on the back nine from third-placed Chris Sanderson (74-7-67).

In the 15-28 handicap section, Knowles triumphed (77-15-62), winning the division on the back nine from Jake Apperley (90-28-62). Mark Owen finished third with 88-20-68.

David Price, with 38 points, triumphed in Kington's Winter Stableford competition.

Richard Williams and Dave Haley topped the charts in Kington seniors' away day at Builth Wells.

The winning duo scored 40 points between them and second place went to Mike Stanley and Ken Canton with 39 points.

Dave Weston and Joe James, with 38 points, secured third place.

Williams came top again when the seniors held a 12-hole competition before their annual meeting.

Results: Division 1: Richard Williams 30 points, 2 Frank Goodwin 26 points, 3 Andy Edey 24 points; Division 2: 1 Dick Lee 26 points, 2 Ken Canton 25 points, 3 Arthur Thompson 23 points.

Joss Ingram scored 41 points to win the 0-12 section of Leominster's Turkey Trot competition.

Wilf Arrowsmith (35 points) finished second on countback from Ed Jones, who also secured 35 points.

In Division 2, Mike Boutcher triumphed with 39 points, while Dave Botwood was second with 38 points and Tony Bufton, third, with 37 points.

Alan Roberts truimphed in Division 3, with 35 points, winning on a countback from Tony Lloyd, who also scored 35 points. Third place was taken by Norman Greener, 32 points, also on a countback.

Michael Pugh, with 37 points, won Brockington Hall's Ray Hooper Vase.

John Stephen was second with 33 points, edging out Ron Plant on a countback.

Rob Brodie and Mike Pugh were taken to the 19th hole before winning the Senior Pairs' Knockout final in a keenly-contested battle.

John Clarke and Jim Stocker finished in second place.
