After a very successful day last year at Dorstone Court, Dorstone, hosted by the Golden Valley YFC Club, the Herefordshire Federation of Young Farmers Clubs moved its annual junior field day to the most westerly side of the county at Mahollam Farm, Kington, kindly hosted by Mr and Mrs Brian Evans and family.

Members aged 10 to 16 years of age from clubs all over Herefordshire competed on Sunday, July 29.

This popular event saw members taking part in a range of fun and traditional competitions.

Last year, the junior members from Welsh Newton YFC gained first place overall and they went on to win again this year with a good margin of 161 points ahead of second placed Kington YFC.

This was a tremendous result for the young members in Kington YFC as the club was only re-formed two years ago. It was a very close race for second place as Golden Valley YFC were only four points behind in third.

Gareth Watkins, county chairman, said: "This year, our junior members have contributed to the field day programme and we have seen members from all our clubs having a great day out at Mahollam Farm."

The junior exhibits are just one of a range of competitions which demonstrate tremendous skill and innovation and this year's theme was a fairytale, with Eardisley YFC gaining first place.

The two highest placed exhibits go forward to compete at the 2008 Three Counties Show.

New competitions among the 27 classes this year included The Stage is Yours, The Weakest Link and Metalwork. The theme for the cake decorating class was Grease - The Musical which carries through to the county chairman's Ball on Saturday, September 1, at Gillow Farm, Harewood End, where the theme is T Birds and Pink Ladies.
