GPs and their surgery staff in Herefordshire have been given a good report by their patients.

They have been voted among the best in the country for the service they provide.

The Department of Health carried out a national survey involving more than two million patients and more than 6,800 in Herefordshire responded.

They had all contacted their GP within the previous six months and they were asked a series of questions about their experiences.

Results of the survey show that Herefordshire GPs and their staff fared well in most categories, meriting marks well above the national average.

A total of 93% patients who responded were satisfied with telephone access to their surgeries compared with the national average of 86%.

Asked about getting an appointment within 48 hours, 92% were satisfied compared with the national 86%.

A total of 92% said they could see a specific GP if wanted, compared with 88%, and 80% were able to book an appointment in advance if they needed to, compared with 75%. And 83% were satisfied with GP opening hours, slightly behind the national figure of 84%.

Paul Edwards, director of commissioning at Herefordshire Primary Care Trust, said the results reflected the very good service provided by GPs, primary care nurses and other practice staff in Herefordshire.

"Compared to the average results across England, Herefordshire's results are particularly positive. However there is scope for improvement in some areas and we will be working with all the practices to make sure patients continue to be satisfied with their experience of their GP surgery," he said.
