A COMMEMORATIVE service for Herefordians to mark the 25th anniversary of the Falklands is being organised by Hereford Mayor Chris Chappell.

The informal service will be held in high town in front of the Black and White house on Friday, October 12, at 1pm to remember those who fought during the conflict.

Councillor Chappell said: "I was aware that we had done nothing to mark the 25th anniversary and Hereford lost 19 servicemen and HMS Antelope - Hereford's adopted ship."

He added: "This will be a chance for the people of Hereford to thank those who go off and fight for democracy and freedom, to think of those we lost and those who returned with physical and psychological injuries."

The event is expected to last about half an hour and will include short speeches by two veterans and hymns and prayers.

The end of the service will be marked by Coun Chappell placing a chaplet on the Royal Memorial on St Peter's square.

On the same day, the Army Benevolent Fund is holding a Falklands concert at Hereford Cathedral.

Jennifer Bate, the first British woman to receive the Personnalite de I'Année, will be playing the organ with the Royal Engineers Band.

The programme will include works by Bach, Holst and Elgar as well as reminiscences from members of the Armed Forces who were involved in the Falklands War.

The aim of the concert is to raise £15,000 for the Army Benevolent Fund as well as remembering those who were involved in the conflict.

Tickets are priced at £10 or £5 for concessions and are available from Outback, Church Street, Hereford or Major James Hereford on 01432 870268.
