A HEREFORD charity is organising a special fundraising event after its annual fete was washed out because of the recent flooding.

St Michael's Hospice, based in Bartestree, had hoped to stage its fete on Saturday, July 21 - the weekend of the deluge that brought the county to a standstill.

Louise Wright, who works in the communications department at the hospice, said staff that could make it to work during that time did an excellent job.

"The staff were wonderful during that time and many slept over and did double shifts, along with volunteers who came in.

"Obviously many cakes and plants were donated to us for sale during the fete and we want to assure those who donated that it wasn't in vain because we gave them to our St Michael's Hospice charity shops throughout the county."

Louise added: "We are holding our first ever Venus Challenge on Friday, September 28, when women of all ages can take part in a night walk.

"Beginning at midnight, the circular walk will leave from Hereford Leisure Centre, which has been great in allowing us to hold the event."

Earlier that day will see a special St Michael's Lottery draw, as the monthly prize of £1,000 is raised to a bumper £2,007 to mark the year.

The events are part of St Michael's Week, which runs from September 22 to 29 and aims to generate extra funds for the hospice by holding a series of events such as coffee mornings and themed days.

Anyone interested in any of these events can call the hospice on 01432 851000 or visit www.st-michaels-hospice.org.uk l Meanwhile, Leominster MP Bill Wiggin has praised county residents during a tour of the flood-hit areas of his constituency.

Observing the damage at villages such as Hampton Bishop, Mr Wiggin said: "I would like to praise the local community for coming together at this difficult time.

"Their spirit and determination to overcome the damage and try to return their lives to normal is admirable."

He said the floods had a devastating effect on businesses, homes and crops throughout the county, and many people now faced financial hardship.

"I have been urging the government to do everything it can to help my constituents with the clear-up and will be pressing them to improve flood defences and take the necessary long-term measures to ensure recent events are not repeated," he added.
