A NEW scheme has been launched to encourage people to 'shop local' in Leominster.

Inspired by a similar initiative which was rolled out in Hay-on-Wye two years ago, several indpendent Leominster businesses will now offer vouchers for customers.

It is hoped that the scheme will result in a boost for town centre traders in the lead-up to Christmas.

Gaynor Lewin, chairman of Leominster Business Group, said: "We knew the scheme had been a big success in Hay-on-Wye so we said 'let's do this for us'.

"It's being run under 'Shopping in Leominster', having been agreed by the Leominster Business Group and it's being launched this week.

"It makes it easier for customers - if you are buying a gift it can be easier to buy a voucher so people have the choice of 30 different stores rather than just one specific one. It's a customer service idea."

The number of shops taking part in the initiative is continuing to grow and there are vouchers available from £5 to £25.

"For us it's very much a shop local campaign. Again it's emphasising that and the importance of keeping Leominster money in Leominster," Gaynor added.

Vouchers are available online at shoppinginleominsterhr6.com or by calling in to Jumping Ships on High Street.
