FROM this week's Nostalgic Times - a visit to the Herefordshire of the past.

TWO Oxfam workers were surprised to see their names in the Hereford Times and linked to a different charity.

John Churchill read that he and his colleague, Ann May, were the new employees of Herefordshire Lifestyles in December 1997.

When they called the Times to highlight the mistake they were surprised to learn it was in fact correct.

Cherry MacDonald, for Lifestyles, said: “It’s pure coincidence I suppose. Anne and John work for us, as well as for Oxfam, but they are four
completely different people.”

  • MARCH 1964 - The quietest Easter Monday for years. That was the verdict of bus operators, the police and British Railways after yesterday’s cold and cheerless weather had caused most people to prefer the fireside.

But nearly 9,000 people braved the cold to visit Hereford races and there were long bumper-tobumper queues of cars before and after the meeting.

Central Hereford was jammed with cars shortly after 5pm and the police said the worst spots were the Wye Bridge and the Eign Street traffic lights.

  • MARCH 1977 - Tipping on the Great Doward, Whitchurch, should be stopped immediately if an accident is to be prevented, said Hereford MP Colin Shepherd.

His comments follow the opening up of the tip to Monmouth District Council, allowing them to dump some 80 tons of domestic refuse there every week. It is also being used for Hereford and Worcester rubbish.

In a letter to the county surveyor, the MP said immediate suspension of tipping was vital, especially as the school holidays are about to start.

  • MARCH 1982 Hereford United were given an 11th-hour reprieve as full city council agreed to extend the lease on the Edgar Street ground.

United now have a base from which they can borrow money against their assets, including the social club and vicepresidents club.

The council’s unanimous decision to approve new terms for the 75-year lease was greeted with cheers and applause from the public gallery.

United is now seeking an injection of cash “from outside sources” to help balance its massive debts.
