SECURITY cameras in a market town could be viewed on the internet as part of a scheme to deter criminal behaviour.

Kington Community Support Officer Dick Alford vowed to find £4,760 to fund the installation of the six cameras which would cover the town centre.

After Kington Town Council refused to pay for the entire scheme at their July meeting Mr Alford told them last week that he would 'get the funding for the town'.

He added that £1,000 had already been pledged for the scheme by Superintendent Sue Thomas, the Local Policing Commander for Herefordshire.

"I read that you were not going to support this in any shape or form," said Mr Alford.

"I always thought we had a good working relationship with the council.

"The £1,000 is from superintendent Thomas and we are hoping in a couple of months time if her budget isn't spent to go back and get some more money.

"I will also be making a report to the local police and crime commissioner asking for a grant from him. It's not just security but they could be linked to the website so everybody could watch the page site.

"I was hoping we could work together and I'm not asking for the council to pay for it. I shall continue with the help of the Chamber of Trade and go ahead to get this funding for the town.

"I will find the money it is the support of the council I wanted and a contribution."

Deputy Mayor Martin Fitton said that there wasn't a need for the cameras at July's meeting but said that Mr Alford's additional information about the financial backing of it could 'change the whole issue'.

Mayor Elizabeth Banks added that hopefully there would be some funds for the council to contribute towards the scheme.

She said: "The council doesn't have much cash to pay for the entire thing.

"We are very keen and will put it on the agenda next month."
