A SERVICE to remember local soldiers killed during The Battle of the Somme will be held on the 100th anniversary of its outbreak.

Twelve soldiers from Hay-on-Wye and Cusop were amongst those who died during the battle which saw a million men wounded or killed, making it one of the bloodiest battles in human history.

The battle during the First World War took place in 1916 between July 1 and November 18.

A memorial chapel within the church contains the names of those from the town who died during both World Wars including the names of the 12 soldiers who died on the Somme.

The service is being held at Hay St Mary's Church on Saturday at 7pm.

During the service organised by Hay British Legion councillor James Gibson-Watt will read out their names. Other dignitaries due to attend are MP Chris Davies, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire Andrew Grant and Welsh Assembly member Kirsty Williams.
