SIX foodies took on the first sponsored eating challenge of its kind in Hereford and there was only one winner.

Food conquered all and £1,000 was raised for the Brainstrust Charity as the six sponsored challengers, including Hereford Times reporter Ben Goddard, were left unable to beat the mountain of food on Tuesday night.

The Beefy Boy's Burger chefs, in the Old Market, Hereford came up with an unbeatable menu for the charity event.

Each competitor was challenged with eating: two pounds of beef burger, a corn on the cob, bacon fries, brisket fries, chicken wings, jalapeno poppers, coleslaw and a milkshake.

It was all too much for the challengers as one by one they fell by the wayside unable to eat another mouthful falling at the final triple burger.

The idea of the challenge was that of Hereford FC chaplaincy and fan Shaun Skinner, from Bobblestock, who has been given 12 months to live due to his growing brain tumour.

The man versus food challenge was part of a list of goals Shaun wants to complete while he is well enough.

"The steroids I am on make you hungry so I thought I would take advantage of that and see if I could do this food challenge," said Shaun.

"It was harder than I thought it was going to be.

"It was going well and then I hit a wall and decided that I couldn't do it any more. The food was great and thank you to the Beefy Boys for what they did.

"The fundraising is also going really well and this effort today has raised £1,000. I have a couple more events including another eating challenge but this time with breakfast and a 12 hour snooker marathon with my 12-year-old nephew."

One of Shaun's dreams is to see his beloved Hereford FC lift some silverware this season which he hopes they can do in the FA Vase final in May.

He added: "I'm delighted they have got to Wembley and one of my dreams is to make it onto the pitch and hold the trophy at the end of the game.

"I didn't manage to get to the Salisbury so listened to it on the radio which I think I was more nervous than being there.

"So now it's just getting myself to Wembley but I will do it one way or another."
