THE work of some of Hereford's newest emerging artists is to go on display next week.

Seventeen second-year students from the BA Fine Art Degree course at Hereford College of Arts have worked together to curate and plan an exhibition of work for Hereford’s Apple Store Gallery.

Entitled The Artists’ Block, the students were given four weeks to plan the exhibition based on their designs so far and say much of what will be on offer is ‘work in progress’.

It’s pitched as a diverse range of works in a number of mediums – ranging from sculpture and film to photography and poetry.

Lin Mathias, a student who has led the project, said: “The work that is exhibited should somehow say where we are as an artist at the moment and reflect how we are working.

“We came up with the title The Artists’ Block to represent a blank canvas.

“It will be at an intimate gallery and will be an opportunity to see new artists' work. Some of it will be experimental stuff. It's an eclectic mix of ideas and interpretations and mixed mediums.

"I think it's great that we have worked really well together and I think it's going to be good as there's so many diverse ideas and some strong themes.”

Exhibitors will be of all ages, with at least 25 per cent aged over 50. Many worked in professional, managerial roles prior to starting their degree, and around 80 per cent did an access course at the college.

The Artists’ Block exhibition is taking place at the Apple Store Galley on Rockfield Road in Hereford between March 2 and April 2.
