A VILLAGER has wrote a poem to Herefordshire motorists asking them to slow down as part of their New Years resolution.

Susan Warne who lives in Winforton on the A438, linking Herefordshire to Wales, wants to warn drivers to slow down before an accident happens.

Currently a portable traffic indicator checks the speed of cars passing through the 30 miles per hour speed limit. Mrs Warne said that this recently clocked one vehicle travelling 85 miles per hour through the residential area leading to the her writing the poem titled 'Winforton Whizzers'.

It states: "We'd like to cross the road, perhaps to use the pub.

"We shouldn't have to run across just to get our grub!

"When exiting our driveways our sight lines are obscured.

"Why does the traffic fly at us, cannot their speed be cured?

"The worst thing is the thoughtlessness, when walking in the rain they're splashing through the puddles and drenching us again.

"So make a resolution to keep within the law, for we don't want a road traffic accident and all that blood and gore!"

Mrs Warne has lived in the village for 14 years but says that an increased use of internet shopping has led to more lorries travelling on the main road.

She said: "For years and years drivers have been coming through our village with a lack of awareness.

"With the rise of internet shopping and 24-hour deliveries there is more traffic on the road and it's more hazardous.

"We have had one or two accidents lately in the village on top of the fatal collisions at Willersley and Whitney-on-Wye, so we just want something to be done.

"If people came through at a calmer speed they could then appreciate the 12 black and white listed buildings in the village and the lovely walk we have to the river.

"Rather than complaining we hoped a poem would make people take more care of our little community.

"We all want to get from A to B but we want people to do it safely. I recently saw a lady driving while cleaning her teeth and its while being distracted when driving that accidents happen."
