Arriving by coach with no problems navigating the channel tunnel, the visit started with a reception at the Town Hall and dinner hosted by the Mayor of Hereford, Cllr Charles Nicholls, who is also the association’s president. The numbers included two town councillors from Vierzon, Mdm Ralida Ferras and Mdm Famienne Montigny who were representing the Mayor of Vierzon who was unable to attend.

The group included a large number of dancers and musicians from Les Berriauds de Vierzon, a folk group in traditional costume who entertained guests at the garden party held in the garden of the Bishops Palace in connection with the Three Choirs Festival.

Later that evening visitors and hosts enjoyed an informal time playing bowls and sampling a sumptuous buffet at the Welsh Club. The itinerary prepared for the visitors included a full day’s outing to Cadbury World, the Severn Valley Railway and a carvery dinner.

On the Saturday, Les Berriauds entertained a large number of people in High Town and there was time for hosts to share the beauty and sights of Hereford with all the visitors before leaving early on Sunday morning.

Fortunately, the return journey through the tunnel passed without difficulty and they arrived safely back in Vierzon in the late evening.

WALKING WEEKEND – Knighton and District Tourism Group is pleased to announce another popular walking weekend on September 12 and 13. The initial programme will include the following walks:

  •  Glyndwr’s Way Walk (1) (Llangunllo to Knighton) – The Glyndwr Walk starts with an amazing 15-minute train journey across the Heyope valley on the famous 13-arch castellated viaduct at Knucklas.

This part of the Heart of Wales railway climbs one of the steepest inclines on the national train system, then into a tunnel.

The little train emerges into the light just before Llangunllo, where our walk begins, pausing later for refreshment at the old Greyhound pub.

Bring £2.70 for your train ticket and a packed lunch.

  •  Glyndwr’s Way Walk (2) (Knighton-Pilleth-Knighton) – This is a circular walk to the battlefield site at Pilleth, one of the most savage and bloodiest battles of the Welsh wars of independence, and Owain Glyndwr’s finest hour.

Visit the ancient church and holy well of Pilleth, where the battle strategy is still on display and where nature has reclaimed the peace and beauty of that bloody episode in Marches history.

(Both walks are in celebration of the 600th anniversary of Glyndwr’s presumed death.

Owain Glyndwr’s Day is celebrated on September 16 – see www.nationaltrail.co.uk).

  •  Nature’s Wildlife Walk – In this gentle, quiet and less populated region of Powys, wildlife abounds. This walk studies the wonders to be seen around the Knighton area. Your senses will delight in the local flora and fauna brought to life by the unfathomable understanding of Dr Joan Payne from the Radnorshire Wildlife Trust.

As there is so much to see, this walk is not for the hard-paced, fast trekker.

  •   Martin’s Beer Walk – Every walker in the world looks for a 'watering hole' and local expert Martin has been researching as many of them still exist.

So come and join this part-history, part-experiential walk that will whet the whistle, exercise the leg muscles and relieve the dry throat even on the harshest hot day.

We’ll arrange the stops, you bring your sunny nature.

  •  Alice’s Family Walks – It’s great to follow Alice and there’s always the chance of seeing a busy (and late) rabbit, a caterpillar, a hare and maybe a dormouse.

These are truly warming walks for a full family experience so bring your tea party picnic, your stories and, of course, your imagination.

  •  Sue’s Walk and Sing – Are you full of song?

Our Sue Harris is leading the first ever Knighton Singing Walk. Sue, who shares her world songs throughout the borders area year round, has designed a walk for those who love to burst into song at nearly every opportunity.

Come and walk, sing, laugh and dance with us as we fill the countryside with music.

  •  Walking for history lovers – Knighton is an ancient border town steeped in history, the only town right on Offa’s Dyke itself.

We have therefore organised a walk this year with a lover of local history who revels in the variety of architectural form found in this area.

The borderlands are rich in tales and speckled with fascinating features so join John Davies on a walk peppered with moments to stop and marvel at the unfolding stories of the area’s built history.

variety of architectural form found in this area.

WALKER’S WALK – We are teaming up with the East Radnorshire Ramblers again this year to present the popular ‘Walker’s Walk’ led by Kevin Jones.

This walk is for those who enjoy the terrain, love the views, warm to the fresh air and feel best when they are seriously crossing country.

So don’t expect too many breaks – just enjoy being there and knowing you have done it!

GREAT TASTE – The world’s most coveted blind-tasted food awards, Great Taste, has just released the Great Taste stars of 2015 and A J Pugh Butchers is amongst the producers celebrating as its Artisan Haggis is now able to proudly carry the little gold and black Great Taste logo.

Thomas Pugh says they have been working on the family recipe for a couple of years now, and with trial and error, and some wonderful customers to taste test for them, have finally got it to the standard they always wished it could be. The recipe was created by Peggy Richards, sister and aunty to Andrew and Thomas Pugh, who own the business.

The business was awarded the maximum three star accolade. To celebrate the achievement they are holding a haggis tasting weekend in the Knighton and Bishops Castle shops, tomorrow and Saturday, giving away free tasters of the haggis to all.

KNIGHTON AND DISTRICT ROTARY CLUB – Rotary update for August.

As usual we enjoyed a busy month involving both fundraising and social events.

You can see our latest updates and newsletter on our website. We started off by stewarding at the Aardvark Books Food Fair then the following weekend we supported Ludlow Rotary Club at their fun dog day. The meeting in the middle of the month was held at the home of members Ivan and Cathy Jones in Wigmore – the sun shone and the food was great.

STOKE LACY AND DISTRICT GARDEN CLUB - At 6.30pm Tuesday, Stoke Lacy and District Garden club will be visiting Adrian and Sheila James’ garden near Evesham. This follows a talk on ‘a garden from scratch’ given by Adrian earlier in the year, and is a chance for members to see the garden for themselves. The cost is £4.50 per person, to include wine and nibbles, and everyone is asked to meet at the village hall by 5.20pm in order to share cars and so as to ensure everyone arrives at the garden on time for the start.

Visitors are welcome to join in the visit. Contact Jo Wells on 01885 400200 or jo@folly.free-online.co.uk.
