A CONGREGATION of more than a thousand, including civic and ecclesiastical dignitaries from the three counties and Shropshire, came together in Hereford Cathedral for the opening service of the 300th anniversary Three Choirs Festival on Saturday.

Among those in attendance were the four Lord Lieutenants of Herefordshire, Gloucestershire, Worcestershire and Shropshire, the High Sheriffs of Gloucestershire and Worcestershire, and the mayors of Gloucester, Worcester and Hereford.

The sermon was given by The Right Reverend and Right Honourable Lord Williams of Oystermouth, Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge, familiar to most as the former archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams.

A former patron of the Three Choirs Festival, Lord Williams spoke about the relationship of art, imagination, music and faith, and about the need for the routine of daily life to be interrupted by the transformative experience of art and music.

The Three Choirs Festival continues until Saturday. For full programme details, go to 3choirs.org
