THREE teams of youngsters from Herefordshire have won places in the regional final of the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Junior Championship to be held at Builth Wells.

Twenty-four teams contested a preliminary round at South Herefordshire when the winners were Kington's team of William Frost, aged 15, Richard Scott, 16, and Bethan Hughes, 13, with 81 points.

Leominster's Minster College were runners-up and their team of Jack Morris, 15, Ryan Mclay, 16, and Joe Lines, 16, totalled 79.

Third were South Hereford-shire's Jon Tookey, 17, Zoe Edwards, 16, and Craig Harrington, 13, with 77 points.

The day raised £2,700 for the BHF from team sponsorship and the regional final at Builth will be on Tuesday, July 3.

The championship, which is supported by the R&A, allows youngsters of all levels to play and compete at national level at some of the best courses in the UK. The national final is at The Belfry on October 1.

Claire Goodman, regional directory for the BHF, said: "All the money these young golfers have raised will fund the BHF's pioneering research, education and care, which will save and improve the lives of people with heart disease."

Last year's event attracted 5,220 youngsters and raised £292,000 nationwide.

The brother and sister partnership of Matthew Harrison and Eleanor Harrison won Burghill Valley Mixed Section's qualifying round of the national Bader Cup competition with 42 points, one more than runners-up Nigel and Marilyn Howard.

The Harrisons go through to the regional round at Bransford in July.

Brian and Lynda Vaughan appropriately collected the Vaughan Trophy - now in its third year - as winners of the winter accumulator.

The competition came from Brian and Lynda's idea and is run over six months. They won by one shot from runners-up Robert Daniels and Heather Burley.

Nigel and Liz Moore finished winners of Leominster's Mixed Accumulator after the last round was played on the hottest day of the year so far.

Their best four scores from six produced 150 points and, in a close finish, they were followed by Mark and Wendy Lane, 144, and John Ford and Pat Owen, 142.

The ladies' running stableford was also played in splendid weather.

Results: 1 Caroline Charles 36 pts, 2 Carol Ruff 33, 3 Wendy Lane 32.

Keith Williams finished with the top aggregate total in Kington's two-day running stableford with 84 points.

Melvyn and Joe Hughes won the TAG Wright Foursomes - a midweek competition for adult-junior partnerships - with 88-16.5-71.5.

George Smith and Ross Moore, 81-9-72, were next in a close finish, with Rob and Alex Metcalfe, 92-19-73, third.

Kington's team were beaten 5-1 away by South Herefordshire in the Handicap League, while the Seniors beat Cleobury Mortimer 6-1 at home in a friendly.

The Ladies' April medal was played in atrocious conditions and this was reflected in the scores.

Ann Rogers and Sue Purslow scored 97-28-69 to win the Coronation Cup, a qualifier for the Peugeot Foursomes.

The ladies halved their match 2-2 away to Herefordshire GC.

Herefordshire GC captain Will Weaver and lady captain Brenda Tingley teamed up to play in their first mixed competition as a pair in the Beaumont Cup, a four-ball better-ball charity competition.

And they combined well for an exceptional 45 points, only to be pipped by the low handicap pairing of Cliff and Sue Mawby with 46 points (gross 66). Third were Roger and Karen Darby with 42.

Seniors stableford, (0-18): 1 Jim Smith 41 pts, 2 Graham Davies 40, 3 Kevin Baylis 37; (19-28): 1 Frank Meigh 41, 2 Norman Haynes 41, 3 Graham Rees 38.

The seniors team won their first home match of the season, beating Worcester G&CC 4-2.

Tommy Taylor had a hole in one - his fourth to date - in Belmont's recent stableford but did not feature in the top four.

Results: 1 Ben Kennedy 40 pts, 2 Sean Pockett 38, 3 Harvey Hancock 38, 4 Jeremy Rolph 36.

Seniors' Lancaster Plate: 1 Roger Smith 80-13-67, 2 Phil Skyrme 81-13-68, 3 John Alexander 83-15-68.

Ross-on-Wye's annual captain versus vice-captain team match, with Frank Gallagher and Dave Griffiths respectively heading the teams, was halved for the first time in memory, providing a quandary as the losing team traditionally buys the wine for the following meal.

It was finally resolved by deciding that the losing pairs in each team should stump up.

The B team halved their match at Rolls of Monmouth, the C team halved 3-3 with Droitwich, and the Seniors won their home match 6-2 against Cotswold Hills.

Summerhill ladies hosted a nine-hole coffee morning competition in superb conditions.

Nick Rendle produced a nett 64 to win Sapey's April midweek medal.

Hereford Municipal opened their Shropshire and Herefordshire Handicap League away to Sapey where they lost 4-2.
