A 77-YEAR-old who is cycling a 140km route was given a boost to his fundraising after he took over Whitney Bridge for the day.
John Harrison from Hay-on-Wye is taking part in the Velothon Wales on June 14 to raise money for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.
He contacted the Whitney Bridge for a donation towards his fundraising.
Maggie Taylor, who runs the toll bridge with husband Grahame Penny, said: “We were so impressed by John’s determination and enthusiasm that we decided to give him our bridge to run for a day.”
Rather than charging the daily 80p toll, Mr Harrison and his cycling friends, asked for donations and raised £525. They also took over the running of the cafe too.
His fundraising is in memory of his sister Gloria Madigan, who lived in Hay-on-Wye.
