A RUNAWAY roe who evaded would-be rescuers on Hereford racecourse is thought to have made his own way back to the “wild”.

There has been no sign of the roe since late last Friday morning (May 15) when he gave those rescuers the run around.

Dashing this way and that to elude all recovery efforts, the feisty roe - thought to be no older than two - wouldn’t even come quietly when the police arrived to assist volunteers from Bodenham-based Herefordshire Wildlife Rescue (HWR).

At one stage officers considered closing Roman Road but, such was the roe’s demeanour, it was deemed too risky to try and “herd” him across to open fields.

With the roe contained as best he could be on the race course, the rescuers returned on Friday night to find he’d gone to ground.

Subsequent checks by HWR over the weekend also saw no sign of the roe.

Sasha Norris, of HWR, said gates at the site were open making it “likely” that the roe had moved off into nearby countryside.

“According to neighbours, there were a gang of deer there last week - five or six. So it seems this young male simply got stuck between the traffic. Hopefully he's headed into the nearby woods or back with friends,” she said.
