A WORLD-RENOWNED engineer behind Britain’s latest land speed record called in to Weobley High School to give science students a rapid run-through of the project.

Ian Galloway has been involved in the design and development of Bloodhound SSC, a rocket-powered car that aims to be the first land vehicle to reach 1000mph.

And while he couldn’t bring the Bloodhound to Weobley – initial testing is set for next Spring – he did bring a model, one tenth of the size, which reached 100mph in just 2 seconds crossing the school’s dinner hall.

Mr Galloway also gave talks to GCSE students about careers in science and technology.

Craig Day, who heads up the school’s science department, said: “We had a fantastic time – the goal was to bring ‘real science’ to our Year 10 and 11 pupils.

“A lot of our students are, for example, really into cars - but they don’t associate that with the science involved with designing and making them.”

The visit formed part of the school’s activities week, with students also getting an insight in to producing ales at a micro-brewery, and using forensic evidence to solve crimes as part of a mock murder mystery in Weobley.
