ONE county man believes he has the skills to help troublesome dogs.

Charles Ross-Robertson has worked with thousands of the animals over the past 40 years and currently trains them at his farm in Risbury, near Leominster.

The 62-year-old, who has worked with the police and the Army, says he mainly specialises in 'aggressive dogs' but is happy to work with any that is not adhering to tasks.

"I'm a dog behaviourist and work with all types from Chihuahuas to Rottweiler's and Great Danes," said Mr Ross-Robertson.

"I deal with all sort of behavioural problems, but aggression is my specialism.

"I got into it when I was about 20 and had my own dogs.

"Some friends asked me to train their dogs and I started charging them.

"I have been a semi-professional ever since and got the qualifications."

Mr Ross-Robertson said that some dogs have changed dramatically since he has looked after them.

"The key is not to hit or shout at them," he said.

"There are 14 forms of aggression, from being dominate to fearful.

"You have to show submission and find out why the dog is behaving in such a way.

"It's about standing your ground and maintaining eye contact."

One dog owner who has seen Mr Ross-Robertson's techniques work is Howard Delaney.

Mr Delaney, from Leominster, said that he has seen a vast improvement in the behaviour of his border-collie Max after he asked Mr Ross-Robinson for help.

"Max was bitten as a puppy and was nervous when walking," said Mr Delaney.

"I had a heart attack in January and met Charles in the doctors.

"I mentioned about Max and he said that he did dog training and could have a look at him.

"He has had about 10 lessons with him and the change in him has been brilliant.

"He is now a much calmer dog and can take him into town without any problems."
