WOMENS GUILD - In May, Mr Richard Jourdan talked about his experiences growing up in London during World War II and he illustrated his talk with film and songs from that time, this evoked memories for members and they were able to sing along.
In June Mrs Penny Platts and her husband told members about the history of cider and they were able to enjoy a few samples.

CONCERT - Join organisers for a delightful summer’s evening concert on Saturday at 7.30pm at St Mary’s Church, Almeley.
An interesting and varied programme awaits you. Baritone Tom Durston-Smith will sing a selection of arias by Mozart, Handel and Verdi as well as a selection from AE Housman’s A Shropshire Lad composed by George Butterworth. He will be accompanied by Robert Green.
Organisers will also have the pleasure of hearing cellist Joris Boon perform again in concert.
And to complete the bill, St Mary’s Church choir, adults and children.
Tickets, to include a glass of wine and canapes, will be £7, under 16s will be free.

CHURCH - On July 6, there will be a service of Holy Communion at 11am at Aymestrey.
FILM CLUB - On July 6, Aymestrey film club will be showing Rush (15) (and with flashing lights). Home-made ice-cream and pop-corn are on sale before each screening, which starts at 7pm.

COFFEE, CAKE AND MARKET - There will be a coffee morning in Bredwardine village hall on July 11 from 10am until 12 noon. This is a chance to meet up with old and new friends over coffee and cake. Included in the market are a number of stalls selling fresh vegetables, home-baked cakes, jams and chutneys and we have regular visits from Noggins a local pork butcher. Alongside this there are stalls selling arts and craft, music and films, knitwear and jewellery created by local artists. Bring along something to sell; it only costs £1 to rent a table for the market and everyone is welcome.

FOOD DONATION BASKET - The Community Larder is Hereford’s Food Bank and provides bags of food to those in urgent need.
Every week this organization gives emergency food parcels to families who find themselves in serious and sudden hardship.

DORSTONE DAWDLE - The second annual Dorstone Dawdle, run by the Friends of St Faith’s, Dorstone village hall and playing field, takes place on July 6, at 11am.
The Dawdle is a 10K multi-terrain race starting and ending in the village; for the less adventurous there’s also a four kilometre fun run at the same time.
Car parking and registration in playing fields on B4348 opposite church; refreshments and barbecue on playing fields for everyone after the race, both runners and spectators.

A FEAST OF CELLO PLAYING IN DORSTONE - Nick Gethin, former member of the London Symphony Orchestra and teacher at Hereford Cathedral School and the county, will be hosting a glorious concert of cello music in Dorstone parish church on July 6 at 7pm. Nick will play music by Vivaldi and Martinu, and some of his most outstanding pupils will also be playing - Augusta Lazenby, Rachel Roper and Rachel Kennedy playing Schumann, Faure and Brahms. Yet more cellists will join them for a multi-cello extravaganza of pieces by Stanford and Scott Joplin.
Stewart Taylor, organist and former choirmaster of Holy Trinity Church will provide support on the piano. Tickets (adults £8 in advance or £10 at the door, under 16s £3) are in aid of the church.

HAUNTED WALKS - For a ghostly experience, Haunting and Horrors of Hereford walks start on Wednesday at 7.15pm from the north porch of the Hereford Cathedral and continue each week until the end of October.
On Sundays they start at 2.30pm.

COMMUNITY MARKET - At the Knighton community market on Saturday, there will be two special events alongside the usual stalls selling a tempting mix of local foods, produce and crafts. Surely generating lots of interest will be the final knit-in to create the Knighton peace scarf, a mammoth pink woolly scarf which will be rolled out from Knighton’s clock tower to the cenotaph on July 5 to draw attention to the national campaign against the replacement of the Trident nuclear missile system. Alongside that shoppers can also view entries for a children’s art competition on the theme of promoting health, fitness and sport. The creations of primary school pupils from across the area will be on display and Welsh Assembly Member Kirsty Williams will be on hand to judge their efforts. The market doors will open at 9.30am and close at 12.30pm.

ARTS AND GARDENS - The sixth annual Llanfair Waterdine arts and gardens festival will be held on Saturday and Sunday. The Everest Hall will be the venue for the art exhibition with works by local artists. In the car park will be a display by Knighton Primary School children on this years Bee theme. Back by popular demand will be ‘artists in residence’ at some of the four open gardens, including Black Hall, opened for the first time. St Mary’s church will be hosting an exhibition by the Marches book art group on a First World War theme and, also in the church will be a display of First World War memorabilia. As always music will be part of the festival, the local talented ‘young musicians’ will be giving a concert, on Sunday, the Llanfair Singers will be bringing the event to a close at 7pm.

LONGTOWN AND DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY’S JULY MEETING - The AGM of the society will be held at Longtown village hall on July 7, at 7.30 pm.
There has been a change of speaker for this meeting.
Mrs Ruth Richardson will be giving a talk entitled ‘How your feet can tell you where you came from’.
This theory did not catch on as DNA came to the fore at about the same time.
The autumn season will begin on September 1, when Peter Rostron will discuss the origins of the First World War, while in October Keith Ray’s subject will be the recent discoveries on Dorstone Hill.
SUMMER PARTY - There will be a summer party at St Mary’s School, July 11 from 6.30pm. Come and join the fun.
At the event there will be a ceilidh, barbecue, licensed bar and cakes.
Adults are £6, under 16s are £4.
The price includes one burger or hotdog.

VILLAGE MARKET - Much Birch village market takes place tomorrow in Much Birch Community Hall (situated just off the A49 next door to Much Birch surgery and signed from the road) between 2.30pm and 4.30pm.
Stalls will include: The Squeaky Pig, award winning suppliers of locally reared rare breed pork, sausage, including Gluten free (to order) and bacon. Moor Meals, award winning, local suppliers of Dexter beef, ready meals and pies.
Llandinabo Farm shop, selling chicken, lamb, duck and cooked meats and Castle Cheese selling a variety of unusual cheeses.
Mark will bring his own made, popular, award-winning chutneys and marmalades.
There will also be a vegetable stall.
There will be a Fair Trade stand and craft stands, which have a large variety of local crafts to tempt you.
Refreshments and ‘take home cakes’, the proceeds of which go to Macmillan Cancer Support, are supplied by Chris and Peter.

CONCERT - The Village Quire will perform a concert in Orcop Church ‘High Days and Holidays Along the Welsh Marches’ on Saturday.
The inspiration for this came from documents of 18th and 19th century life in the local archives of Llandrindod Wells, Hereford and Brecon libraries.
The singing is what you would have heard in the 18th and 19th centuries in church and the readings are taken from a selection of books and newspapers set in the Marches.
The programme encompasses all of rural life. Tickets, including refreshments are priced at £8. The concert starts at 7pm with poetry readings.

RELAY FOR LIFE - Chairman Mick Fryer invites you to The Relay For Life on John Beddoes school field from 11.30am on July 12 until 12 noon on July 13.
Relay for life is a fund raising event for Cancer Research.
The idea is for teams to raise money for this important charity with at least one member of each team moving around the track for the whole 24 hours to show that cancer never dies.
You can walk, run or whatever you want.
Mick, a survivor wants other survivors to attend and take part in the first lap or part lap to celebrate life.
There will be loads going on including regular entertainment on the main stage.

MUSIC - Local resident Benji Kirkpatrick takes time off from multi award winning band Bellowhead to celebrate Independance Day with a concert at St Michael’s Church in Discoed on July 4 from 7.30pm.

FETE - The annual fete will be held on July 5, between 12 noon and 4pm, at The Vine (HR1 4EX), by kind permission of Richard Price.
Not just a traditional village fete, there will be Tarrington Brass playing on the lawn and home made cream teas in the courtyard, plus an opportunity to wander through and wonder at the glorious garden.
Treasure hunt, silent auction, archery, hot food and bar for the adults; loads of fun things for the children with bouncy castle, face painting and more.

Wellington
THE CHEWING THE CUD - Screening at Wellington community hall on Saturday is now sold out.
This entertaining and warm-hearted film was a sell-out and an audience favourite at the
Borderlines Film Festival in March. It portrays the showmanship and characters that gave the
market its vibrancy.
There are tales of triumph and sadness, of traders juggling china and the unexpected visits of both Tom Jones and the KGB, of livestock drovers and the Dean Leigh canteen, and of visits by The Queen, Miners Fortnight and lost pigs.
Interviews with farmers, auctioneers, townspeople, breeders, traders and council workers are
complemented with archive film footage and photographs. “You don’t want people in 20 years’
time asking for memories of the livestock market. It has to be done now.” For ticket holders,
doors open at 7pm and the screening starts at 7.30pm, followed by questions and answers.
Please do bring along any Old Market memorabilia that you have, and your own reminiscences.
Refreshments will be available.
EXHIBITION - The Friends of Weobley Parish Church will be holding their 29th annual art exhibition and sale of paintings over August bank holiday (23-25) at The Hopelands, Weobley.

Bishopswood WI
ON June 13, 30 members of Bishopswood WI and nine visitors attended the meeting. It was a short meeting presided over by Mrs Ann Jones, president, and then followed a most amusing presentation and talk by Mr Mike Pullin BEM on the subject of the Hospice Angels. He explained how he had founded the organisation in 1996 to raise money for St Michael’s Hospice, a local charity, to help and care for patients with cancer. It had started with his birthday. He had a party which was well attended with a jazz band. However, afterwards some of the guests said they didn’t like jazz. Two years later he decided to have another party at the local pub and charge an entry fee of £5.
He was amazed to find that the proceeds were £1650, and decided to give the money to the local charity St Michael’s Hospice.
From then on it became an obsession.
He devised diverse ways of raising money, from skydiving, to visiting a total of 19 countries on a motorbike, in the company of many other motorbike enthusiasts, and another event where he and his friend Mick Marshall to his horse called Frank and a carriage to London from Ledbury, a total of 120 miles, taking six days.
That trip raised £12,500. The talk was accompanied by two DVDs, the first explaining how the organisation was founded, and the second, video footage of Frank’s journey to London and the various stops on the way. Mike was most amusing, had a great store of stories and jokes to tell, and was really inspiring. From 1994 until 2012 he raised over £170,000, which resulted in his being awarded the British Empire Medal in recognition of his work.
Everyone really enjoyed his talk, Mrs Ann Jones gave the vote of thanks, and members were invited to donate if they wished. The result was a record for any WI that Mike has been to, as just under £325 was raised, and with Gift Aid making another 25%, well worthwhile.
The meeting closed at 8.50pm. The next meeting is on July 11 at 6.30pm. No speaker as it is the summer social. All welcome.
Bromyard
THE Local and Family History Centre, Bromyard will be open on Sunday from 10am - 4pm for the Bromyard Gala 1940s street fair.
The stalls will include nearly new, bric-a-brac, book stalls and afternoon teas. There will also be a First World War exhibition open which has free entry.
On July 8 there will be a trip to St Fagan’s, the Welsh National History Museum, a 16th century Elizabethan manor house set in 100 acres. The cost is £12 per person. Huntington-Hereford WI
HUNTINGTON-Hereford WI enjoyed a talk by Laney Mead with her glass work she makes under the name of Izzy Beads. She told how from rods of coloured glass how she makes beads, animals and flowers that can be strung on to necklaces, bracelets and earrings. The members were fascinated at the intricate detail that went into producing them.
Laney told of her involvement with Beads of Courage, that she and like minded craft people support. They make coloured beads for this charity which supports children with cancer. Hereford Hospital had recently signed up for this charity the members were informed. The Beads of Courage programme is a new concept being introduced in the UK which is designed to support children going through their treatment. It allows them to tell their story using colourful beads. The beads are used as meaningful symbols of courage that commemorate different milestones such as blood transfusions, bone marrow transplants, hospital stays, chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments.
Their beads build up over time into a unique record of what they have been through. Some days are really tough for these kids.
However, the beads are used for encouragement and say to everyone “that was tough,but I did it”.
Kington U3A
THE next social meeting for Kington U3A will be on July 10, at 2pm at the usual venue of Kington football club. The title for this meeting is board games and afternoon tea with Judith Canham.
This is bound to be a very lively afternoon. All are welcome to come and enjoy the speakers and to discover new interest groups.

Ledbury Freemasons
MEMBERS of Eastnor Lodge No.751 which meets in Ledbury, Herefordshire took part in the Ledbury June Community Day which provided the opportunity for the lodge members to raise the profile of Freemasonry in their community.
The lodge set up a display in St Katharine’s Hall together with other local organisations.
The occasion was the ideal time for the lodge to launch their latest community project, a calendar 2015 with images of Ledbury, past and present, to be sold in aid of Ledbury Marie Curie Fundraising Group. The lodge has sponsored community arts co- ordinator Jeanette McCulloch to design and produce the calendar in conjunction with the Marie Curie Fundraising Group.
The calendar project is expected to generate more than £1000 for the group as a result of Eastnor Lodge’s sponsorship.
