Flooding advice from West Mercia Police's website:

Flooding
During the current severe weather West Mercia Police are working closely with the emergency services and County and District Councils to keep people safe.

In an emergency – if there is danger to life or risk of injury – call 999. If it is not an emergency, call 101.

Weather and Rainfall Updates
Communities in the affected areas are urged to keep up to date with the latest flood forecasts and warnings as the bad weather continues.

The Environment Agency continues to monitor rainfall impacts on already flooded areas and the latest information can be found on their website: www.environment-agency.gov.uk  or by phoning their 24/7 public helpline (0345 9881188).

Transport and Travel

The road situation changes rapidly and drivers are urged to drive with caution; listen to the local radio stations and keep checking the councils’ road closure pages.

Herefordshire: https://www.herefordshire.gov.uk/transport-and-highways/maintenance/roads-closures-and-diversions/

Advice for Road Users

If driving through larger puddles or smaller areas of standing water, drive slowly and steadily, allow oncoming traffic to pass and always test your brakes after leaving the water.
If water has flooded across a section of road it may be difficult to tell exactly how deep it is.  If you do come across a road that is flooded DO NOT attempt to drive through the flood water.  This not only has the potential to put yourself and other people in serious danger, it could also damage your vehicle and wreck your engine.
Pedestrians and cyclists are also advised to take extra care and avoid travelling through flooded areas, keeping to clear pathways and cycle routes. With many drainage systems overwhelmed by flooding, there is a danger of drain and manhole covers coming loose which would not be visible if covered by flood water.

School Closures

Please see the following web pages for the latest information about school closures. We also advise checking individual school websites (where a school has one).

Rail users are facing major disruption between Great Malvern and Ledbury due to flooding at Ledbury.

London Midland has confirmed the line is blocked and buses have been ordered to travel between Ledbury and Hereford.

However, with roads flooded this is proving difficult and passengers are being advised to not travel to Hereford if at all possible.

Flood advice from Herefordshire Council:

We are advising residents of road closures throughout the county. Road closures can be viewed on out Road Closures page and we advise those travelling to check to make sure their route is accessible.

When travelling please obey traffic signs. Flood warning boards will be out on the road network and advise you to slow down where  parts of the road surface are submerged. If there is a road closed sign please do not attempt to drive through the flood water. As the road surface is not visible whilst travelling through floodwater it is not safe to do so.

We advise people not to walk through flood water as this is potentially hazardous. Manhole covers may become dislodged, the power of the water flow may not be apparent and the water may be contaminated. For more information on floodwater hazards please check the Environment Agency website.

The Highways Agency is urging road users to take care, particularly in the North East, North West and South West of the country, as heavy rain and strong winds are forecast from this afternoon until midnight.

Met Office forecasters based in the Agency’s National Traffic Operations Centre have issued a severe weather alert for the three regions – with gales up to 80mph a possibility.

Road users are advised to plan their journeys before setting out, check weather conditions, leave extra time for their journeys if travel conditions are poor, and delay their journey if the weather becomes severe.

More advice is available on the Highways Agency website here.

Traffic Management Director Simon Sheldon-Wilson said: “We are constantly monitoring the potential impact of weather on our network and are keeping a close eye on the current situation.

“Where flooding has caused problems, we have responded quickly to ensure the safety of road users and to re-open lanes and roads as quickly as possible.”

The Met Office is a forecasting a vigorous storm bringing spells of heavy rain across the country through Wednesday afternoon and evening, bringing 15 to 25mm of additional rainfall in areas already saturated.

A first peak in the winds is likely over the South West of England around the middle of Wednesday but with the main swathe of even stronger and potentially damaging winds crossing parts of northern England later in the day.

Around lunchtime, the M48 Severn Bridge will be exposed to gusts around 45 to 55mph and possibly up to 65 to 70mph for the M4 Second Crossing.

Later in the day, expect south-west to westerly winds to strengthen up to 60 to 70mph quite widely across the North West and North East, but possibly reaching 80mph over the most exposed routes along the coast and over the hills.

This will be strong enough to cause severe damage to trees, structural damage and a risk from flying debris, thus likely to generate disruption on parts of the network.

Expect a gradual decrease of the wind later in the night.

There is a particular high risk that high-sided vehicles, caravans and motorbikes could be blown over and the Highways Agency, in conjunction with the Met Office, are strongly advising that these types of vehicles avoid, if possible, the following sections during the severe weather.

Overflowing drains have exposed a Leominster road to raw sewage.

Leominster town councillors Wayne Rosser and Pauline Davies have been helping to stop the flood at Cheaton Close.

Balfour Beatty have been at the site as well as Welsh Water and sandbags are now in place which have stopped the flow.

"It had to be done quickly and everyone worked together as a team," coun Rosser said.

"We want people to know that the town council are trying and will continue to do our best to help out if people need us."

Any concerned Leominster residents can call councillor Rosser on 0773761570.

This is a letter sent in to us by Lisa Mellings.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the fire crews from Leintwardine and Kingsland who helped rescue me from my vehicle last Wednesday night.

I didn't see the water on the road in the dark until it was too late and even though I was in a 4x4 I found myself stuck.

It was terrifying and I cannot thank enough the young gentleman Adam and the fireman trying to get to work who came to my aid and that of another young lady who was also stuck.

The fire crews were amazing and not only got me to safety but managed to get my car out to dry land. They then made sure I had the means to get home safely courtesy of my young hero Adam.

Can I take this opportunity to urge everyone to get behind our rural fire stations many of which are under threat of closure.

They help us out so much when we live in rural communities and I for one sleep a lot better at night knowing that they are on call. A huge thank you to you all.

Responding to reports of Cabinet rows over the handling of the flooding crisis, West Midlands Friends of the Earth's campaigner Chris Crean said:

"Ministers have been desperately trying to blame anyone and anything for the flooding crisis - from bird sanctuaries to the EU.
"The Government is clearly out of its depth and not prepared to face up to a mess of its own creation.
“Flood defence spending has been slashed, frontline staff at the Environment Agency have been cut and our ability to cope with the consequences of climate change has been steadily dismantled.
“The Prime Minister must focus his Cabinet on the crucial job of saving people's properties, businesses and livelihoods. And then, when the floods abate, Mr Cameron must put in place a long-term action plan that protects us all from the threats posed by a changing climate.”
