HALL NEWS — New windows have been fitted at Abbeydore village hall.
The committee has thanked Abbeydore and Bacton parish council for all its help in securing a Big Lottery Fund grant to enable the committee to fund them, and also Matthew Wood of SB Glass and Glazing for carrying out the work.
BELLS - Dore Abbey bells feature in an article on bell ringing in local magazine Absolute.
WOMEN’S GUILD — There was a last minute change of plan to the November meeting. A lighthearted game of ‘riendship Whist was played where everyone starts off with two prizes and finishes with two prizes.
In December the club had its Christmas lunch with entertainment.
The first meeting of 2014 will be today (Thursday) in Abbeydore hall when there will be a reflexology demonstration. New members are most welcome.

PARISH COUNCIL — At the recent meeting of Breinton parish council, planning consultant Roger Page of Page Swinford gave a presentation to the parish councillors and around 30 members of the public, regarding a proposed development on land at Banbh Farm.
Although only an indicative plan at this stage, the proposal is to develop 11.5 acres of land along the bank of the River Wye to create a rural business in the main (but not exclusively for) disabled anglers.
The location of the site is on the southern side of the lane, approaching Breinton Common from the village hall.
Mr Page explained that the intention is to provide course and game fishing along the Wye, and also to create a lake on the land to provide further fishing for clients.
The development will include a residential property for the landowner on the road edge and 10 lodges within a wooded area to provide accommodation for clients and carers.
They hope to include an area of land to the west as a habitat for wildlife.
The owner will be the on-site supervisor, and an able-bodied fisheries manager will be employed.
Members of the public expressed concerns over the proposal.
Particular mention was made of the loss of good quality agricultural land, and the impact of removing existing trees and shrubs from along the river with the adverse impact this will have on erosion of the bank.
There would also be the problem of flooding of the area, not only of damage to the stands along the bank, but also the impact on the lake and fish stocks if flooded.
The River Wye is part of a SSSI.
The public also referred to the matter that access to the site was along a narrow lane, which would cause problems for the development of the site and for coping with a large number of clients travelling to and from the site and associated services.
Concerns were raised about the viability of the business and that this was not the first occasion that the current landowner had expressed an interest in building a dormer bungalow on open countryside, though he did confirm that no previous planning application had been submitted.
Mr Page responded to each point raised and confirmed that any planning application will conform to regulations laid down by the planning authorities, Natural England and the Environment Agency.
He thanked the parish council for the opportunity to make the presentation, and the comments received will provide food for thought before they proceed to Herefordshire Council for pre- application consultation.

PARISH PLAN - The results of the Clehonger parish plan questionnaire will soon be ready to be made public. In the meantime the steering committee have agreed that focus groups will be re-convened to identify the main issues and draw up action plans to take forward improvements that people in the parish say are needed.
The groups will be transport and communication, services and leisure, housing and the environment. MEETING - The January meeting was held in St Michael’s hall with Coun Mrs J Webb in the chair.
Also in attendance were the clerk, Coun Graham Powell and five members of the public.
Open forum. Ward councillor Graham Powell gave information on the future of broadband locally, waste disposal, local schools and New Market Street developement. There were comments from local residents on highway issues and standing water near the site where improvements to the pavilion are being carried out.
Clerk updates included news that Savills had requested permission to attend the next parish council meeting to discuss an application from Kentchurch Court Estates for residential developement in the parish of Ewyas Harold. This would be followed at a later date by a public meeting. Balfour Beatty had confirmed that one or two main contractors were acceptable for lengthsman appointments as long as all the conditions were met. The number of maintenance days must be programmed in before March 31 and included in the remaining budget.
It was resolved to award the remaining part of the contract to Terry Griffiths for the period leading to March 31, 2014.
The next meeting of the group parish council will be on Tuesday at 7.15pm in St Michael’s hall.

HEREFORD RAIL MALE CHOIR - Will be pulling into St Peter’s Church tomorrow (Friday) in order to raise funds for the mayor of Hereford’s charity. The choir has a wide-ranging repertoire but as this will be their first concert of 2014, a special year commemorating the beginning of the First World War, part of the evening will be devoted to songs from the war, including Keep the Home Fires Burning, Pack up your Troubles and It’s a Long way to Tipperary.
These have been especially arranged for male choirs by Alwyn Humphreys, who for 25 years was the musical director of the Morriston Orpheus Choir.
Rail choir leader Tony Bailey said: “We are delighted to be singing for the mayor’s charity and in a venue where we have not performed before. St Peter’s Church is an ideal location for us and has that close association with the Rev John Venn, something that makes the evening all the more special.
“We are also delighted to have the Hereford Cathedral School Senior Chamber Choir performing during the evening, and we are grateful to David Evans, head of music, for the school’s contribution.”

Kingstone and Thruxton
GROUP PARISH COUNCIL - The parish council met on January 22, with ward councillor J Knipe, PCSO Fiona Witcher, and three members of the public in attendance.
The usual standing agenda items were discussed, and in particular the following points were noted: Local policing update - PCSO Witcher gave an update and confirmed that three teenage residents of Kingstone will be subject to anti-social behaviour measures.
One will be asked to agree to an Acceptable Behaviour Contract, the other two will be served with ASBOs. The hope is to curb their anti-social behaviour, which has included throwing stones at cars and buses as they pass through the village.
PCSO Witcher was also made aware of residents’ concerns about speeding traffic in the village, especially during school term time. She said she would mention this issue to the traffic police.
Local planning - Architype has asked Kingstone Sports Association to provide detailed drawings of the football pitches on the Seven Site.
No objections were raised to a planning application for Bridge Court Barn to provide a new one and a half storey vaulted roof extension to existing office building to form a new reception/waiting area.
The application also included a new car parking area. There is no further news on when the Whitehouse Drive and Central Park developments might commence.
Lengthsman Scheme - Quotes have been received from interested parties who wish to undertake the lengthsman’s duties in the parish.
These will be discussed in closed session at a future parish council meeting.
Sports Association - The Sports Association thanked the parish council for the recent donation.
Activities on the Seven Site have been severely curtailed by the weather.
Many parts of the field are flooded.
Ward councillor - Councillor Knipe confirmed that he will not be apologising to the Herefordshire Council planning officer as requested by the Standards Committee.
He circulated his letter of response on this issue, which is now available on the Kingstone and Thruxton parish website.
Parish councillor vacancy - The vacancy is still open.
Neighbourhood Plan - Some local parish councils are engaging the help of a firm of consultants to complete their neighbourhood plans.
The parish council will consider this option at a future meeting.
The next meeting will be held on March 5 at 7.30pm.

APPEAL FOR INFORMATION – Knighton and District Tourism Group was saddened and disappointed to hear, at its meeting last week, that its new information panels (at the lay-by near the Milebrook Hotel) have again been vandalised, after only standing for a matter of hours.
The damage may be so serious that replacing it will be too expensive for the group as someone has taken the boards away this time.
The previous board stood for over 20 years without damage and the new board had specially mounted reflectors to minimise the risk of damage.
A local builder will be inspecting the board and assessing the damage.
Chairman John Rickerby said: “This is a busy road and we are appealing for any information about the person causing the damage.”

COFFEE MORNING - There will be a coffee morning at the Royal British Legion Club on February 15 from 10am-noon. There will be stalls, a tombola, raffle plus a chance to have a cuppa and chat.

UNDER-18s FOOTBALL - The under-18s football team have a big game next Thursday, February 13, at 7.30pm.
They have drawn Hereford United under-18s in the semi final of the Giant Killers Cup at Llanandras Park. Hereford recently took Manchester City under-18s all the way to extra time in the FA Youth Cup, eventually losing 3-1. Why not come and watch the town’s up and coming players.

MUSIC - The Brass Funkeys and The Showhawk Duo will be playing at the Assembly Rooms on Saturday evening from 8pm. The Brass Funkeys will play jazz, funk, reggae and diva music on trombone, trumpet and saxophone and the Showhawk Duo will play everything from 70s rock to operatic.

CHI GONG - New to Presteigne are classes in the ancient form of exercise from China, chi gong.
The classes will improve balance, creating vitality and bringing peace of mind.

ENERGY DIARY FOR SCHOOLS - The children of Presteigne Primary School have become pioneers and are leading the way in energy saving.
Back in the autumn term the Eco Committee were involved in the first trial of the Lightfoot’s Energy Diary.
The aim of the energy diary is to record in work and pictures a child’s view of energy consumption for a week and to get families talking about energy usage in their home.
Mandy Brick the co-ordinator of Lightfoot said: “I was very impressed with quality of their work, in their booklets and the school assembly the Eco Committee held to explain to the other children in the school about their work”.
As a result Llanidloes Primary School is now taking part, and other Powys Schools will follow.
News of this project has spread as far as schools in London who are interested in joining in.

VALENTINE’S CEILIDH – Woolhope Parish Hall, February 15 at 7.30pm with Stone the Crows ceilidh band.
In aid of Woolhope Bell Fund.
St George has one of the finest sounding peal of bells around.
It is also one of only three anti- clockwise rings in Herefordshire and consequently very special.
However, the bells are becoming increasingly difficult to ring because, like anything mechanical, parts get worn and need replacing.
This is not surprising as the frame and bells (some of which date back to the 1600s or earlier) have not had any major work done to them since 1908 i.e.more then 100 years ago.
Tickets (including supper) in advance £7.50 per person or a cost of £22 for a family ticket.

Herefordshire Health Service Retirement Fellowship
THIS month’s meeting of the HHSRF will be held on February 17 at 2pm in the St John’s Methodist hall, St Owen Street, Hereford.
The guest speaker this month is Mr Richard Scott, community fundraiser for Marie Curie in Herefordshire, who will be giving the members his presentation on The Work of Marie Curie Cancer Care.
The first outing organised by the Social Committee for 2014, is on February 20.
This is a visit to the world famous 13th century Hereford Mappa Mundi and the Chained Library Exhibition at Hereford Cathedral.
Members will be given a brief talk and can then explore the history of Hereford’s historic artefacts.
This will be followed by lunch at the Imperial in Widemarsh Street.
All retired NHS staff are very welcome to come along and join the group.
