Herefordshire Council's cabinet approves principle of £9m investment in leisure facilities

Hereford Times: Herefordshire Council's cabinet approves principle of £9m investment in leisure facilities Herefordshire Council's cabinet approves principle of £9m investment in leisure facilities

LEISURE facilities across the county could be set for a £9m upgrade after Herefordshire Council's cabinet approved funding plans.

Subject to approval of the capital programme by full council in February, millions in capital funding will be spent on Halo centres in the county.

The funding will be paid for by a borrowing programme with a schedule for repayment through rent by Halo that will mean that council taxpayers will not have to stump up any cash.

The programme will see major improvement and development works at Hereford Leisure Centre, Leominster Leisure Centre, Ross-on-Wye Swimming Pool, Ledbury Swimming Pool and Hereford Leisure Pool.

Councillor Harry Bramer, cabinet member for major contracts and assets, said: “We are clear that the council’s priorities are children and young people, keeping vulnerable people safe and boosting the economy.

"We are having to pull funding away from other areas to meet these, but this proposal shows we can still work with partners in the county to safeguard services such as leisure facilities in the county."

The work on the projects would commence during the summer of 2014.

Surely in these times of austerity, leisure is the last thing the cabinet should be spending our money on. Let those who use these facilities pay for them.

I totally agree with Jolly Jester Two, let them fix the pot holes first before spending a fortune on currently adequate facilities. If councillor Harry Bramer wants to boost the local economy he must realise our dangerous road network will detract tourists and investors alike, I hit a pot hole the other day covered in flood water and I swear it was so deep you could have buried someone in it!

This does seem a bit queer.
Hereford Leisure pool has just had a load of investment.
The Leisure centre looks a bit tired but is perfectly serviceable for my monthly soapy wrestling tournament and the greay twister contests are going down well too.
I notice that this is to be funded by borrowing though.
Tis to be repaid by HALO in rent payments.
So not real money and not diverted from the emergency pothole fund.
