New Greenway bridge to open in Hereford

A NEW bridge that aims to cut journey times for cyclists and walkers in Hereford will open next week.

The Greenway, which runs across the River Wye from St James and Bartonsham to Rotherwas, will provide a valuable link into the Hereford Enterprise Zone and offer a quicker and more environmentally friendly alternative to driving through the city.

The new cycle route, funded by Sustrans, is just under three miles long and most cyclists should be able to cross it in 15 minutes.

"I am delighted that this project is nearing completion," said Councillor Philip Price, cabinet member for infrastructure.

"It will make the lives of those regularly travelling to and from Rotherwas easier and the journey to work quicker and more enjoyable.

"With a comparable journey made by car taking significantly longer, I am confident that the route will attract new walkers and cyclists switching on to the health, wealth and environmental benefits of this alternative way of travelling into Rotherwas."

People will be able to use the bridge from High Town to Thorn Business Park from 3pm next Tuesday, with the rest of the route to Chapel Road being open by December 20.

The route is traffic-free via the railway underpass into Thorn Business Park and largely follows the line of the dismantled Hereford to Ross-on-Wye railway.

Eventually, the aim is to extend the route along the former railway line to Holme Lacy.

Henry Harbord, Sustrans' area manager for the West Midlands, said: "This project is all about giving people the opportunity to make everyday journeys by bike or on foot and, with the level of support we've seen from the public all the way through the project's development, I'm certain that once open, it will help us towards delivering our ambition to double the number of journeys under five miles made by foot, bike or public transport, from two out of five to four out of five."

Would the HT editor explain why all the comments on the school ipad story were removed and no more allowed? (It was the most commented story at the time of censorship)

Had someone had their fur ruffled and rang the HT to complain - either from the schools or the council?
Had a post broken site rules (and if so, why not delete the offending one with an explanation)
Had Bobby47's post been too shockingly mild and moderate?
One of the first posts, from a parent at one of the schools, expressed gratitude that the HT at least provided a place for open discussion that the schools weren't providing - how wrong he/she was.

got to fully agree , why has this topic been deleted?? some schools have opted out but its still an ongoing issue within the county, and would be a good point of reference for any concerned parent .Can the the HT explain why please??

Couldn't have put it better GDJ.
I had not commented on this story myself, but had read the posts with great interest.
It would seem that the last post I read was one saying the schools had decided NOT to go ahead with this scheme.
If a complaint was made, I would be very interested to hear on what grounds they thought they had the right to complain, when folk were voicing genuine concern.
This really is getting beyond ridiculous.

I don't think a poster with the moniker 2wheelsgood would be likely to be a car driver.

I am though and I love it.
I love getting into me car in me pants and socks and going for a drive in the dark when no-one can see me.

I sometimes sleep in the garage to be closer to my car, so as I can comfort it during the night when the foxes are about.

I daresay 2wheels does similar with his motorbicycle.

There was a photo from the FB page used by the Hereford Times recently, but they failed to give a source credit. This week's hard copy HT gives the opening day as Sunday, although HC press release states it to be on Tuesday.

By the way "The Greenway"? What sort of hopeless name is that?

I also paid this week's wages out on a printed copy of the HT. The Ipad story had a statement from the headteacher and, hilariously, he seems to think that the comments on the HT website caused the downfall of his plan.

Whilst we could be flattered that he thinks we have such influence I would be upset if I was a parent that had carefully considered it and decided that it wasn't good from an educational, social or financial perspective.

Shame that the fearless journalist who reported the statement didn't think to ask any questions about whether the schools or Activate Education (which is the link between the Marches Federation and the other two schools) would have received any payment. Perhaps, though, we can make a better guess at who asked the HT to pull all the comments.
