HEREFORD'S Castle Green became a huge outdoor classroom for youngsters learning about the importance of the historic site.
Pupils from St James' Primary School visited the riverside park under the guidance of the Friends of Castle Green to learn about the medieval castle that once stood there.
"The children had a great time and showed a lively interest in the history of the Castle Green," said Mark Hubbard, who chairs The Friends, lives in Castle Cliffe, the last remaining part of the original castle, and told the children about his home.
Storyteller Carol Graham and teacher Rob Hattersley, both members of The Friends, also helped to bring the history of the green alive.
Marlbrook School is next to visit the castle, which was knocked down by Cromwell's army in 1645 and turned into a civic park in 1753.
Hereford City Council gave a £1,000 grant towards the new series of school lessons to ensure youngsters grow up knowing an important part of the city's heritage.
