WITH a cold snap on the way Wye Valley Health Trust is working with Age UK Hereford to ensure the county’s elderly can weather through.

The County hospital’s already under pressure - it recently agreed to cancel operations to cope with accident and emergency demands - the A&E team is gearing up for an influx of hypothermia or pneumonia patients, of which the elderly are the group most at risk.

Jane Griffin, A&E lead nurse, said: “We’re urging everyone, but particularly older people, to stay healthy by following this simple advice: wrap up warm by wearing several layers, eat well and stay hydrated with plenty of hot drinks..

“If you do become unwell, remedies at home, or from your pharmacist, may help alleviate symptoms. Call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 in the first instance if your health deteriorates. If you’re having breathing problems or are experiencing pains in your chest dial 999 or attend A&E at The County Hospital, Hereford”.

Ruth Nice, Chief Executive Officer at Age UK Hereford & Localities said: “We are encouraging older people to contact us and find out about how to keep warm with our free advice and information including advice on winter fuel and cold weather payments, local services and support, as well as practical advice about diet, exercise and safety in the home.

“Our teams are attending a variety of locations across the county, distributing free advice and information as well as responding to individual concerns and enquiries.
