WORLD-renowned photographer Timothy Allen, who works with the BBC’s Human Planet team, will be just one of the highlights of the very first Hereford Photography Month, which runs from Tuesday until November 24, hosted by Hereford College of Arts.

The event has been launched in recognition of the gap created by the loss of the Hereford Photography Festival in 2011, and promises a fantastic calendar of events to suit a variety of photographic interests.

Timothy Allen’s appearance at Hereford College of Arts’ Folly Lane campus on Tuesday, October 29, will see him talk about his work with the Human Planet documentary team.

Working for the programe he visited 40 countries, produced a best-selling book of the images, formed an exhibition and had his images included in the series’ publicity and branding worldwide.

The talk is accompanied by a number of exhibitions, including Dan Howarth-Salter’s Metamorphosis at HCA’s new campus for university level students at College Road.

Dan uses this exhibition to record the recent transition whilst paying tribute to the history and custodians of this outstanding listed building.

Meanwhile, over at Folly Lane campus, find The Wye by Celine Marchbank, winner of the Hereford Photography Festival’s Open Here commission in 2011.

The Courtyard Centre for the Arts plays host to an impressive exhibition from awardwinning Scottish photographer Sophie Gerrard and her Protectors of Sight project, highlighting the need for change to help the millions of cataract-blind people in India and across the world, while Photography in The Marches at Apple Store Gallery includes local photographers and recent graduates’ work.

New Talent at Hereford Deli showcases a rolling programme of work by HCA Photography students who are currently studying for their degrees at the college.

Back at Folly Lane, 2013’s Young Photographer of the Year Competition entrants, aged nine to 19, will have their interpretations of the theme, Apple of My Eye showcased in an exhibition, with the winners of the competition’s categories being announced at the private viewing on Tuesday.

“There is a wide range of photography courses, inspiration and talent to be found in Herefordshire, and we’re looking forward to celebrating it during Hereford Photography Month,” said Grace Gallagher, who has worked to curate the exhibitions and Young Photographer Competition.

“We hope the events will appeal to a mass audience, and inspire budding photographers across the county to pick up their cameras.”
