KINGTON Choral Society are running a workshop at Presteigne Assembly Rooms on Sunday focused on Karl Jenkins’ famous piece for choral singers, The Armed Man.

Subtitled ‘A Mass for Peace’ , The Armed Man was commissioned in 1999 by the Royal Armouries Museum and was first performed at The Royal Albert Hall, London in April 2000, by The National Youth Choir of Great Britain with the National Musicians Symphony Orchestra. This is one of Karl Jenkins’ most popular compositions and has been performed by professional and amateur choirs more than 1500 times since its first performance.

The day will be conducted by Roger Langford who conducts Kington Choral Society and the Gwent Bach Society. Roger is a skilled choral conductor who studied at the Royal Academy of Music after graduating from York University, and he has been a professional singer for more than 25 years.

The Armed Man is essentially an anti-war piece, based on the Catholic Mass, principally the stirring 15th century folk song L'homme armé, which Jenkins combines with other sources and styles.

The workshop, £12 (free to under 18s), runs from 10am to 4.30pm, with registration from 9.30. To book a place, call 07766 097600 or email kingtonchoral@mail.com
