FOLLOWING the success of its recent production of Princess Ida at The Courtyard, Hereford's own multi-award winning Gilbert and Sullivan Society is back at the venue with its brand new production, Back to 1964.

"Two years ago we performed a very successful Jubilee concert looking back to the music of 1952," says musical director Alan Durman. "This year I took inspiration from the music scene 50 years ago, which was very exciting. Apart from the flourishing pop charts with the rise of singers like Matt Monro, Julie Rogers and Shirley Bassey, and groups like The Supremes, The Beach Boys and The Beatles, there were ground-breaking musicals like My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins and Fiddler on the Roof. We will be singing music from all of these as well as G & S numbers."

The group will then be repeating the performance in a charity concert with dinner, drinks and a small auction in an Accasions marquee at Outfields, Kington Road, Eardisley on Saturday, July 5 from 7pm. The event organiser is society member Leanne Player who, following her recent work with children in Ghana, pledged to raise funds for the orphans that she met, helping to provide them with clothing, food, schooling and with the ultimate hope of eventually funding an orphanage. The event will raise funds both for this cause, through the African Adventures Foundation, as well as for the society.
