The last time Joshua Davies was on stage at The Courtyard was in Hereford Musical Theatre Company's production of The Fully Monty.

Fast forward just three/four years and he's back, but this time in his own show, Thoroughly Modern Musicals, which he is staging with fellow graduates of London College of Music - Jonathan Graham and Josephine Sherlock.

Josh started his acting career when he was just six years old, a veteran of the Courtyard's Youth Theatre and a valued member of HMTC before he left to study for a BA Hons degree in musical theatre. "The first two years were training and then in the final year we did a lot of shows, including a new musical called Quill before going on to do The World Goes Round," he recalls. "We did a showcase at the Charing Cross Theatre and that was a big thing at the time, really exciting.

"After university I applied for lots of things," he says, explaining how the trio decided to put on their own show. "I got a few bits here and there, including a part in a new production of the Pied Piper and a small part in Hollyoaks. It's good, but not constant. I think the best way forward is to make your own work. The three of us were talking and said 'we kind of know what this is about and how to do it. Let's just go for it'."

Plans are already in place for Josh, Jonathan and Josephine to stage Return to Neverland next year, "but we decided we needed to do a music revue first."

With several dates lined up for Thoroughly Modern Musicals, Josh was determined that the tour had to start in Hereford. "I wanted to bring my production back here and show people what I've learned.

"People in HMTC think it's great, even though some of them didn't think I'd be back, but I've got a lot of them involved in the show."

The show, he says, will feature a lot of music from more recent shows, including Wicked, Ghost - "I hadn't seen the film and had no idea how they'd do it on stage, but it's very clever" - Frozen, the Lion King and Mary Poppins. The last two, says Josh, are seen as modern musicals, a generation on from Rogers and Hammerstein, despite their classic status.

"We won't have much in the way of a set, but we will be in full costume," says Josh. "We want to take the songs from the musicals and give a taste of the show. There'll be happy songs, sad songs and some comical bits, too."

Proceeds from the show will go to St Michael's Hospice, who looked after Josh's nan at the end of her lilfe. "They helped her and were so kind to us. I'd like to give something back. We're sharing the money with Great Ormond Street hospital, the copyright owners of Peter Pan. They said that as it's a sequel there's no requirement for us to do that, but we want to anyway."
