A SINGLE black bin is expected to be enough for every household’s rubbish once the county’s alternate weekly waste collections start.
And cash-strapped Herefordshire Council is giving those bins away in a bid to boost support for the collections which see general waste going one week and recyclables the next.
The bins will be delivered over August ahead of the collections starting in November.
But the council confirmed today (Tues) that only one bin will be available for each household – along with a set of instructions on how to use it and a “collection calendar”.
The council expects to save around £500k a year by moving to alternate collections.
Cllr Harry Bramer, cabinet member for contracts and assets said the saving could be invested in “key priorities” such as social care.
“Alternative weekly collections is a widely used approach to waste and recycling collection and has been used successfully in Shropshire and most of Worcestershire for many years,” said Cllr Bramer.
“Recycling rates in Herefordshire are currently under the level expected by Government and this move has been shown to increase recycling rates in other areas in the UK,” he said
