A HEREFORDSHIRE firefighter has made an appearance on a BBC One programme, sharing her “hectic” life.

We Are England, as a part of its Serving England series, aired an episode called We Are Firefighters on Friday (October 28).

It showed a unique insight into the heart of the modern-day fire and rescue service.

The programme followed different stations from Hereford and Worcester fire and rescue service as they work around the clock to keep their communities safe.

Eardisley fire station said it was thrilled to support the programme as its firefighter Leanne Player featured.

The programme saw how she balances her professional and personal life.

When she is not on duty in Bromsgrove, she is on standby for her local village, Eardisley.

She said being on call means she could have to rush out at any time, and she only has five minutes to get there.

Ms Player lives with her partner who is also a firefighter.

“We both live a hectic life,” she said.

The fire service has helped her cope, she said.

“There are times when we see some gruesome things,” she said.

Ms Player said having a partner who understands benefits her.

But statistics shared on the programme said in 2021 20 per cent of fire and rescue service personnel rated their mental health as poor or very poor.

She talked about breaking the stereotypes for male firefighters. She finds as a woman she has more room to talk about things.

The programme also saw the Eardisley firefighter take part in water rescue training.

The fire service carries out drills once a week for three hours, she said.

In the last two years Hereford and Worcester fire and rescue service has dealt with 259 water rescue calls, shared the programme.

Ms Player said she has rescued people from the river and their homes during floods.

She also went out to different incidents while on shift throughout the programme.

The hardworking firefighter said she still feels an adrenaline rush every time.
